Hip-Hop Pioneer Lovebug Starski Dead at 57

The hip-hop world suffered a loss this past week, when legendary DJ and rapper Lovebug Starski died. He was just 57 years old.

According to NPR, the pioneer (born Kevin Smith) suffered a heart attack in Las Vegas, though further details are unknown.

Lovebug Starski was one of a core group of DJ pioneers, alongside DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and Grand Wizard Theodore.

Hailing from Bronx, New York, he is said to have helped coin the actual term “hip-hop”. He was even referenced on classic hit singles, including The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy” an Q-Tip’s “Life Is Better.”

Many figures in the hip-hop community mourned Starski’s death, including producer DJ Premier, Just Blaze and Rob Base.
