A former defensive end for the Buffalo Bills was found shot to death inside his Detroit home.
Police said Robert Eddins, 28, was one of two victims found in an apparent double homicide on Dec. 20, WJBK reported. The other victim was identified as Ricky McFarland.
Both bodies were originally discovered by Robert’s father, who went to visit his son to check up on him.
“The last time he had spoken to him was 6 p.m. last evening,” Bridget Eddins, Robert’s mother, told WJBK. “Between then and now is when the crime occurred.”
“All they know is they went out last night,” she added. “There isn’t a car here. There’s nothing here. That’s his dad’s truck. He came here and found him. That’s all we know, dead in the basement. Shot.”
Authorities believe the suspect(s) tried covering up the crime.
“The gas was on from the stove,” Detroit Police Captain Kurt Worboys told the news station. “The pilots were not lit. It looks like an intentional act.”
“There’s at least one if not more individuals that just committed a double murder,” Worboys added.
Police also said there were no signs of forced entry. Investigators believe the victims might have known the suspect(s).
“There was one room that was tossed, so it looked like they were looking for something,” Worboys said.
Law enforcement officials found the bodies of Robert and McFarland outside of the ransacked room.
Bridget said whatever happened inside the house, she knows her son didn’t lose his life without a fight.
“I know one thing, whoever did it, he wasn’t going out like that,” she told the news station. “He probably told them to give me your best shot that’s how he was.”
Robert played for the Buffalo Bills in 2011, the NY Daily News reported. Prior to his NFL career, he played college football at Ball State.
“He played pro football. We are all proud of him,” Bridget continued. “But it is what it is. (We) don’t know what happened.”
