Spike Lee Receives 6-Minute Standing Ovation at “BlacKkKlansman” Screening

We already knew the newest Spike Lee Joint was gonna be slammin’, ya heard? Despite its controversial story, BlacKkKlansman is receiving lots of positive reactions.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lee received a whopping 6-minute-long standing ovation after the screening of BlacKkKlansman at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night (May 14). If that’s any indicator of how good the film is, we’re in for a treat when it opens to rest of the world.

The film is inspired by the true story of a black detective in Colorado named Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) and his Jewish partner Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), who join forces to infiltrate the local arm of the Ku Klux Klan in 1979.

Coming at time when racial tensions are high, the film is said to make several references to today’s America, including current president, Donald J. Trump (Spoiler alert: they’re not flattering). The film, non-coincidentally, will premiere roughly 10 years after the Charlottesville riots.

This one is definitely for the culture.

BlacKkKlansman is due in theaters Aug. 10.
