Actor and producer Tyler Perry has signed a deal to produce content across different networks owned by the company Viacom including BET.
An exclusive from Deadline says that Perry is a “creative force” who will produce original content similar to the way Perry already works under his deal with the OWN Network. He will be producing television, film and short-form video.
Under the agreement, Perry, who is currently under an exclusive deal at OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, will produce approximately 90 episodes annually of original drama and comedy series for BET, which caters primarily to African-American audiences, and other Viacom networks. Viacom will have exclusive licensing rights on the TV programming as well as exclusive distribution rights to Perry’s short-form video content. Additionally, the pact gives Paramount Pictures exclusive first-look rights on Perry’s feature film projects.
Some of Perry’s work such as his show Meet the Browns and the Madea movies are already featured on BET. “I am delighted that we are deepening our longstanding relationship with Tyler,”Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BET Networks, said. “BET co-funded Tyler’s very first feature film, we’ve aired his movies and many of his series with great success on our networks, and we’ve honored his tremendous talent with our signature awards. This partnership will allow us to work even more closely with him and bring more of his iconic content to our viewers.”
